How did you get your job?

“When I was in undergrad doing a different internship every year. I started off on the PT track, the ATC, the whole bit throughout kinesiology. Ultimately I found Biomechanics and I really enjoyed it and what I found is that I really liked the objective side of working with data and how that impacted performance.”

“When I graduated in 2015 there were not many opportunities without going to grad school. At the time I didn’t even know I wanted to work in Pro Sports… As I finished my PHD there were 2 things I did to help me land my job. The first is, I tried to just be connected with people that are in the space… When I was at conferences there was a lot of opportunity to hang out in the academic circles.”

“The second thing that I did was a lot of self promotion. I have a twitter account that is basically only about baseball science, there is very little personal information on there. Anything that I was doing in the lab, I was just putting stuff out and just trying to get noticed… As I was graduating I went through the normal job search and interview process and eventually landed my first job with the Texas Rangers.”

“With the Rangers I was on a contract… After a little bit over a year the renewal time was coming up and it just wasn’t a good fit. I was interested in other opportunities and they were looking to move on from me, but because of that self promotion that I did back in 2015-16, a guy with the Twins reached out to me about a video we did at East Carolina about eye tracking and baseball hitting… My boss at the Rangers knew him and he called the Twins asking about hiring a new biomechanist from them. He replied saying ‘I thought you already had Chris’ and he told them that they had just let me go. He picked up the phone and called me saying ‘I didn’t know you were looking for a job come work here.’
