Take Away
From my meeting with Dr. Curran, I have come to learn more about the industry than I could even imagine. Since biomechanics is a field of the sports industry I am interested in, I am very glad that I had the opportunity to speak with him. He had many great things to say about the industry. However, there were many glaring issues that he had brought up to me.
After speaking with Dr. Curran, I do not think that I would pursue this type of work. Although it does seem fulfilling to do as a dream job it is not the type of work that can support a family for a long time and a big belief of mine is that I want my family to live comfortably. I am not the type to grind for 5 years just to get to a job that only pays me what most other entry level jobs are getting.
It also seems that in this industry, work life balance is nearly impossible. Working 6 to 7 days per week while also having to travel and be in all of these different environments is not how I want my work life to be. I would like to have time to spend with my family and have time for my own personal things. I don’t want to worry about having to leave for 3 or 4 weeks at a time and not be able to bring my family because I’m not getting paid enough for the work that I am putting in.
I completely respect Dr. Curran for stepping away from pro sports since this was a sort of dream job for him. For most people it would be a dream job just to work with a professional sports team. However, in order to have a liveable life you need to take a step away and look where the money is better.
I believe that although this career path is not going to earn the big money, it can be a worthwhile career. Being one of the people that can help a team win a world championship or helping an athlete get that big milestone contract is worthwhile. However, I don’t think that it is worth giving your personal life up for a dream job. That is just my personal opinion.
Dr. Curran has given me a lot of great information about his career and I appreciate his honesty about working in the sports industry, both the good and the bad.
